What is a pip on AUD/USD?
A pip is the standard small step in a forex price. On AUD/USD it is 0.0001, the fourth decimal place. If the price moves from 0.7022 to 0.7023, it has moved one pip. Most brokers quote one more digit, a pipette, which is a tenth of a pip.
Pip value of AUD/USD by lot size
For one standard lot the pip value in USD is 100,000 units × 0.0001 = 10 USD. Because AUD/USD is quoted in US dollars, that is already the value in a USD account: $10.00 per pip for a standard lot. An account in another currency converts the dollar amount at the current exchange rate, so the pip value is a little different in euros or pounds and moves as that rate moves.

Sizing a trade on AUD/USD
The pip value is what turns a stop-loss in pips into a position size. Divide the amount you are willing to lose by the stop in pips times the pip value of one lot. With $10.00 per pip for a standard lot in a USD account:
- Risking $100.00 with a 20 pip stop-loss: $100.00 ÷ (20 pips × $10.00) = about 0.50 standard lots.
- Risking $250.00 with a 35 pip stop-loss: $250.00 ÷ (35 pips × $10.00) = about 0.71 standard lots.
- Risking $500.00 with a 50 pip stop-loss: $500.00 ÷ (50 pips × $10.00) = about 1.00 standard lots.
Round the result down to a lot size your broker allows, usually 0.01. The position size calculator does this for any pair, risk amount and account currency.
About AUD/USD
AUD/USD shows how many US dollars one Australian dollar buys. The AUD is the currency of Australia, whose central bank is the Reserve Bank of Australia. The USD is the currency of the United States, whose central bank is the Federal Reserve. It is one of the seven major pairs, which all include the US dollar. The two currencies belong to different trading sessions: AUD to Sydney (about 22:00 to 07:00 UTC) and USD to New York (about 13:00 to 22:00 UTC). A pair is usually most active when its two home sessions overlap, though prices move at any hour the market is open.
Things to check with your broker
- The size of one lot. This page uses 100,000 AUD units for a standard lot, which is the usual size but not universal.
- How the broker defines a pip. The pip value on your platform's contract specification always overrules this page.
- The exchange rate the platform uses to convert to your account currency. It is the rate at the time of the trade, not the rounded one shown here.
- Costs. The pip value is only a distance in money. Spreads, commissions and overnight swaps come on top and are not included.
Numbers on this page use the European Central Bank's euro reference rates for 2026-10-23 (source: ECB statistics). They are for information only: your broker's own rates and contract specification decide the real figure.
